Father’s Day is a time of reflection and gratitude for the remarkable fathers who have shaped our lives. Today I reminisce about my own dad, who passed away a couple of years ago. I won’t lie, it still feels surreal that he isn’t here. However, his presence lingers in my thoughts, especially when I find myself on the verge of doing something questionable.
My father played the primary role in raising me during my formative years, and a lot of who I am is because of him. The nuggets of wisdom I gleaned growing up not only shaped my character but have also guided me on my journey as I purpose to live and work in ten African countries.
What better occasion than Father’s Day to reflect on these nuggets of wisdom?
It’s your Life; Focus on You.
During my A-Levels, I struggled with Economics and consistently received low grades. When my father noticed my performance, he sat me down to find out what was going on. I confessed that I didn’t like my teacher.
In response, my father asked me three simple questions:
“What is your name?”,
“What is your teacher’s name?”, and
“What name will appear on your A-Level certificate?”.
Those questions hit me with a jolt of realization. I immediately understood that I needed to refocus and apply myself. As a result, I ended up earning an A in Economics.
I continue to carry this lesson with me every single day, both in my work and in my personal life. It’s easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing, but my father’s wisdom reminds me to stay true to myself and when it came to making the decision to travel across Africa i wasn’t waiting around for anyone, i didn’t tell myself i couldn’t afford it, and I didn’t let anyone convince me that it was too dangerous.
Fight with Everything in You
My father’s upbringing was marked by poverty. When I hear stories of children walking to school without shoes, I can’t help but think of my father’s own experiences. His journey from poverty to becoming the first university graduate in his family and a successful businessman is nothing short of extraordinary. His resilience and determination taught me the importance of fighting against all odds. I carry this lesson with me, remembering that no obstacle is too great to overcome if you fight with everything in you.
The Significance of Empathy
My father’s actions demonstrated the profound impact of kindness and empathy. Whether it was helping a stranger, lending a hand to someone in need, or paying double to a street vendor selling fruits, he showed me that even small acts of compassion can make a world of difference in people’s lives. I strive to embody this lesson, seeking opportunities to show empathy and kindness to others.

My dad had an adventurous spirit, and I believe he would be proud to see me traveling across Africa. From my childhood memories of spending holidays in game parks, I now understand the joy of discovering new places and embracing the spirit of exploration. Although as a teenager, waking up at 6 am for game drives and enduring areas with no cell service wasn’t always enjoyable, those experiences planted the seed of adventure within me.
To my father and all the fathers out there, thank you for the love, guidance, and lasting impact you have made on our lives. Your lessons continue to shape us and inspire us as we navigate the journey of life.
