I was talking to my mother the other day, and she goes, “Shirl, do you know I haven’t picked up a book in ages?” (PS: Never call me Shirl; there are only a handful of people allowed to use that nickname). Her comment made me reflect on how little I’ve read in the past few months, and I felt embarrassed especially for someone in search for a #ABetterLife.
I can’t say who I inherited my love of reading from because my dad was also an avid reader. However, my own love for reading began at age 10 when I picked up my sister’s copy of “The Count of Monte Cristo”. I was immediately drawn in by the treachery, romance, adventure, and mystery, and to this day, it remains one of my all-time favorite novels.
With all my traveling, I haven’t been able to read as much as I’d like but, here’s what I currently have open on my Ipad;
“Perfect” by Judith McNaught:
I absolutely adore a good romance novel, and I believe I’ve read every single Judith McNaught novel ever published. If I could, I would read them over and over again. “Perfect” in particular is a great reminder that life’s adventures aren’t about perfection but rather the imperfect moments that make our lives unforgettable. Embrace unexpected detours, spontaneous interactions, and always remember that the most amazing things can be found in unexpected places.
“Losing My Virginity” by Richard Branson:
Lately, I’ve been diving into books by successful entrepreneurs, hoping to crack the code to my billion-dollar fortune (which hasn’t happened yet). In the meantime, I fell in love with Richard Branson’s larger-than-life spirit that reminds us to dream big and never settle for the ordinary. After all, life is more exciting when you take risks and embrace new experiences.
“David and Goliath” by Malcolm Gladwell:
This year, I’ve faced so many David and Goliath moments, but I’ve come to realize that sometimes, being the underdog can work to your advantage. Like David against Goliath, overcoming challenges during your travels can lead to surprising victories. Embrace your unique strengths, embrace the unexpected, and transform obstacles into triumphs. Don’t underestimate the power of determination and creative thinking.
“Never Split the Difference” by Chris Voss:
I used to be a terrible negotiator until I read this book. Maybe it’s because I’m a Libra, and I need to feel balanced at all times. I would be the absolute worst person to have an argument with. After reading this book, I’ve started looking at negotiation as a friendly game of chess. From haggling at vibrant markets to finding common ground with fellow travelers, the art of negotiation adds an exciting twist to your travel encounters.
“The Laws of Human Nature” by Robert Greene:
Understanding human behavior enhances your travel experiences. Observe the locals, connect with fellow wanderers, and unravel the fascinating intricacies of different cultures for a truly immersive adventure. People-watching is a fascinating pastime, and understanding human behavior can add a whole new layer of amusement to your travel adventures.
“Essentialism” by Greg McKeown:
Decluttering brings simplicity to our lives, and when it comes to travel, packing light and focusing on the essence of the journey enhances our adventures. Embrace minimalism, shed unnecessary baggage, and make room for the memorable experiences that truly enrich your journey.
Books offer more than just lessons. They provide engaging stories, valuable insights, and entertaining anecdotes. As you embark on your own search for #ABetterLife, I would like to remind you all to find something to read. Let it inspire you, guide you, and bring an extra touch of joy to your explorations.
Until next week, happy reading!
