Guess who went swimming with the dolphins? If you guessed me, then you guessed right. Now that I think back on the experience, calling it swimming is a bit of an exaggeration.

Listen!!!!! I had a floater, similar to the one my 4 year old niece uses in her kiddy pool, and a diving instructor with me the entire time, but hey a win is a win. It’s definitely one item ticked off my bucket list.

As we journeyed across the Indian Ocean to the diving site, I was struck by the alarming amount of plastic waste floating on the ocean surface. It was disheartening to hear our guide describe the devastating effects of plastic pollution on marine life.

For the past few months, Jibu and Twiggy have been constant companions on my quest for #ABetterLife, urging me to minimize single-use items and reduce my ecological footprint. However, the severity of the situation became even more apparent when I witnessed the devastating effects of plastic pollution firsthand. It served as a stark and urgent reminder that our actions concerning plastic truly hold the key to healing and revitalizing our ecosystems.

When I returned to my idyllic seaside resort later that day, a sense of curiosity and determination fueled my thoughts on how I could further prioritize sustainability and ethical practices. I felt compelled to explore what other people are doing and learn from their initiatives.

Meet Katarina from Flipflopi, an East African movement on a mission to end single-use plastic and ensure that all other plastics are part of a circular economy.

Flipflopi is the world’s first recycled plastic sailing dhow, which has embarked on several expeditions from the Indian Ocean to Lake Victoria, raising awareness about plastic pollution and engaging East Africans in alternative ways to use existing waste plastic. They also advocate for legislative action to ban single-use plastics.

Let’s make a conscious effort to make every action count by choosing eco-friendly products and supporting companies that incorporate sustainable practices into our daily lives. It’s crucial to advocate for policies that protect our planet. Together, we can build a #BetterLife where nature and humanity thrive in harmony. We are at a turning point in the world, and it is imperative that we take bold steps towards sustainable ecological preservation.
